Gladys was twice engaged before marrying Alfred Robert Knight. The first engagement was to Joseph Withington, a dock worker and Roman Catholic. The photograph on the left is believed to be him, it was certainly one of Gladys’s fiancés but which of the other two photographs was the other fiancé is uncertain. It could be neither of them.
Below is Francois who has signed his name above his head and writes on the reverse side…
“Dear Miss Gladys, I have the pleasure to sent (sic) you my photo and I hope you will be so kind to keep it in remembrance of our first meeting at your Aunt’s home. With every good wish believe me yours very very sincerely,
Francois de Heeschouver, Filvorde (Belgique).”
Alongside Francoise is Gladys’ cousin Alfie White. Presumably the meeting referred to by Francois was at Alfie’s mother’s home.
