All the Fun of the Fair
Hollycombe
August Bank Holiday Monday 2003 and here we are at
Hollycombe Steam Fair just south of Liphook in Hampshire with
Marion and Martin. It boasts three steam railways,
several traction engines, a steam operated farm from the very late 19th century and a steam driven circular saw big enough to slice tree trunks into planks. We rode on two of the railways and looked
around the farm but spent most of the time being kids for the day by enjoying the fairground rides - and they let us in at the OAP discount rate too!
These Austin Devons cant be much more than 50 years old. They seem to be losing their attraction on
seaside piers and the like and make more money by being sold to collectors for about £1,000 per car.

Rosemary
ride the wheel.
A view from the top of the Liphook Eye, sorry, big wheel. Dont look too hard at the structure; it
looks a bit flimsy by modern standards.
The Razzle Dazzle (pictured right) is perhaps the scariest ride as it rotates at high speed and dips
violently from one side to the other. Its quite difficult to remain in ones seat as seat
restraints havent been invented yet. Here everyone looks suitably apprehensive before it starts.
When it gets going some people enjoy it. Contrary to appearances the group on the right arent bored
with the ride but are fed up with the photographer who was proving to be totally incompetent at
operating a digital camera and who pressed the button four times before it actually took a photo.
(Who decided it was a good idea to have a button that you press half way, pause, and then push it right down?)
Left to right:-
Carol, Ian, Martin, Marion and Rosemary.
More good fun going up and down on the Whirligig. When alighting and slightly giddy do grab the pole
and alight carefully or you might find yourself going down and coming up with a bruised backside.
