Garden pond

After several months of preparation, obtaining suitable materials and equipment and waiting for that short period when the weather might be warmer but before the fish get too active, work on connecting the new filter began. The most critical moment was to be reconnecting the pipe which ran from the very lowest point of the pond. Here are a few of the wet and cold highlights of the day.

The new filter system has been installed in its new home and most of the pipes and taps connected. Just one pipe has proved difficult - the one that feeds water from the bottom of the pond. The water needs to be dropped below the level of the outlet so that it can be cut and reconnected to the new filter and then dropped low enough to reach into the bottom drain and clear out a blockage caused when a large fish removed the drain’s protective cover and allowed the pipe to clog with small pebbles and other debris. When that was completed the pond had to be refilled with water which took a little over eight hours. The fish seemed to be almost entirely unconcerned with the operation.

The author apologises for the poor quality of these images. They were taken by a visitor whose camera proved to be faulty with the focus stuck on close up and the exposure mechanism failing to cope with occasional bursts of sunlight. As a result the customary large images are unavailable.
