Roller skating was a very popular pastime and was both fast and daring using nothing more than iron wheels and only a thin strap to hold them to your shoe. Rubber replacement wheels were available at half a crown a go but suspension systems and comfortable boots had yet to make an appearance. The most artistic moves were usually followed by a tumble.
