Minley Estate

1958 and 1959
(Includes a little of the subsequent address, 5 Johnson Way, Church Crookham)

The photographs indexed here were all taken in 1958 after Malcolm saved up £17.10s.0d for a second hand camera and began to develop film from a variety of cheap and sometimes dubious sources. The film developing tank had been discarded by a work colleague of his father (presumably because it produced unevenly developed negatives) and the messy work took place on the dining room table with the room darkened as much as possible with mother’s old war time black out cloth. The results were poor but what survives is better than nothing. Later on a better developing tank was purchased (I still have it!) and the work was transferred to the bathroom with equipment made from plywood, a dried milk tin, venetian blind slats discarded from grandmother’s windows and bits taken from a broken plate camera found in a junk shop in Aldershot. The wonder is that no one was electrocuted.
