I recall my father speaking of his apprenticeship only once. He said he had helped make and install replacement impellor wheels for the sewage pumping station across the river in Woolwich. It seems possible that would be the works at Crossness which are now preserved.

INDENTURE

This Indenture made the 9th day of February One Thousand Nine Hundred and thirty-five WITNESSETH THAT Leslie Robert Knight of 12 Ripley Road, Custom House, E.16. (hereinafter called the Apprentice) in the County of Essex Son or Ward of Gladys Emily Knight (hereinafter called the Guardian) by and with the consent and approbation of the Guardian testified by us executing these presents doth put himself Apprentice to Troup, Curtis & Co. Ltd. of whose registered office is situate at 282 Victoria Dock Road, London E.16. (hereinafter called the Master) to learn the Art, Trade or Business of General Engineering and to serve them as an Apprentice from the 9th day of February, 1935 for a term of five years thence next ensuing subject to the provisions hereinafter contained.

The Apprentice and Guardian hereby bind themselves jointly and severally that he, the Apprentice, shall faithfully serve, obey and comply with all lawful regulations and instructions issued by the master and shall not absent himself without permission from the Master’s services but in all things as a faithful Apprentice shall behave himself towards the Master during the said term.

And that he, the Apprentice, will make up all lost time at the end of each year of the said term before a further year of service hereunder is deemed to commence, and for the purpose of this clause time shall be deemed lost in any of the following cases, namely:

    (a) Abstention from service under these presents on account of sickness or other physical incapacity unless a Doctor’s Certificate is produced or sent by post addressed to the Manager of the Works of the Master, at which the apprentice is serving, within three days of the commencement of such absence. Provided always that if such absence medically certified as aforesaid shall exceed in any one year of the said term, a period of four weeks, all absence or absences from the services of the Master in excess of such period of four weeks shall be deemed to be lost time.

    (b) Abstention from service under these presents from any other cause whatsoever unless leave of absence is previously granted by the Master’s Manager of the Works at which the Apprentice is serving at the time.

And that he, the Apprentice, shall be punctual in his attendance at the Works and also shall work such number of hours each working day as may be reasonably directed by the master, and shall attend regularly and work diligently at such further educational classes at least twice a week, for instruction in technical matters at such times and places as the Master may indicate to the Apprentice.

The Master reserves the right to dismiss the Apprentice and to annul and cancel this indenture for any breach thereof or of the lawful rules and regulations affecting an Apprentice of the Master for the time being or for misbehaviour, disobedience or unfaithfulness on the part of the Apprentice towards the Master, or in the event of the apprentice losing time in the manner hereinbefore defined for any period or periods together exceeding three calendar months during any year of the said term. Such cancellation of the indenture by the Master as aforesaid shall be effected by notices in writing, delivered or sent by registered post to the guardian and to the Apprentice at their usual or last known place or places of address and signed for and on behalf of the Master by the Secretary or any authorised person for the time being.

The Apprentice shall not be a member of any Trade Union.

The Apprentice shall not authorise or knowingly consent to any Trade Union or any official or agent or member thereof interfering in any matter between him and the Master.

The apprentice shall not take part in any way whatsoever in any labour dispute the Master may have with any of his employees or in which the Master or any of his employees may be involved, and shall during the continuance of any such labour dispute, do all such work as he may be lawfully required to perform, and as the Master shall direct to be done.

The Master will not be responsible for any interruption or stoppage of the term of service hereinbefore mentioned due to strikes, lockouts, labour troubles or other causes beyond his control.

Subject as aforesaid, the Master shall in consideration of the services of the Apprentice, teach and instruct the apprentice in the said trade or business by the best means in his power and shall pay the Apprentice the following wages, i.e.:-

During the 1st year at the rate of 11/- per week.
During the 2nd year at the rate of 14/- per week.
During the 3rd year at the rate of 18/- per week.
During the 4th year at the rate of 22/- per week.
During the 5th year at the rate of 27/- per week.

If during any week of the said term, time shall have been lost, a proportionate deduction from the weekly wages payable to the Apprentice, shall be made in respect of such lost time.

Upon completion of the said term these presents shall be handed over to the Apprentice with a certificate of service endorsed thereon and signed by or on behalf of the Master, constituting a testimonial such as in the opinion of the Master shall have been merited by the Apprentice. And for the true performance of all and every of the said Covenants and Agreements, the said parties bind themselves.

N.B. Richard Vernon Seymour was the priest at the local Church of the Ascension at which Leslie Knight had been both chorister and server and where he was later married and where both his children were christened.

This is to certify that Leslie Robert Knight has been in our employ for a period of over five years.

During this time he has received training as a Mechanical Engineer embracing the operation of all classes of Machines and General Fitting work.

He has proved himself to be a capable workman and attentive to his duties, and we can recommend him for any position of trust.

He completed his apprenticeship of five years with us on the 9th February 1940.
