1971 was the year in which Kirsty found her feet and began to explore her surroundings. As with the other years in this section the photos are dated and sequenced largely by guesswork based on other events found recorded in the same negative envelopes, however as there are obvious signs of muddle no guarantees can be given.

On Kirsty’s first birthday we took her to Elstead pond and while taking a stroll around the heather edged path beside the water she let go of Mum’s hand and took a few faltering steps. As you can see she looks rather pleased with herself. After that, as is equally obvious, she would wander pretty well anywhere invited or not.

The elevated patio was the next thing to explore. It was elevated because when we moved to this new house in August 1969 we found that the back door dropped two feet or more to garden level with no step. A patio at high level with both a slope and steps to the garden was a priority DIY job. Note the paving stones set diagonally; a very bad idea as so many of them had to be cut long before I could afford an angle grinder.
