67 Twelve Acre Crescent

At the end of 1957 I spent a whole £17.10s.0d on a second hand camera bought in Downing Street, Farnham, Surrey. A next-door-but-one neighbour gave me 400 feet of Kodak Tri-X film which I later came to believe he had stolen. Tri-X was the fastest and grainiest film you could get back then, 400ASA in modern parlance, and if you forced the development a little you could make it faster still and just about take pictures under an ordinary 100 watt lamp at home. With flashbulbs costing nine pence each the attraction was obvious. Looking back on these photos the grain looks unacceptable but on the other hand, without that stock of Tri-X these photos would not have been taken at all.
All the above were taken in February 1958. The two on the left at Springfield Road and the one on the right at Twelve Acre Crescent. The design of the sofa and chairs is the give away!
Sandwiched between two photos from May 1958 is one from December 1958, all taken at No. 67. I’m pleased to say the books on the left are still regularly looked at and the clock (ten guineas, Winegartens of Bishopsgate, 1949) is still ticking away merrily. Unfortunately the nice mahogany box supporting the clock gave way to progress in 1962. In case you are wondering, it’s a Philips 12" television complete with doors to hide the ‘vulgar’ screen, dating from 1950.
April 1959. If the chair doesn’t tell you where these were taken the roll-top desk on the right will.
December 1958 but is it Christmas? Where are those well licked sticky paper chains that left such a nasty taste?
